Club head speed vs ball speed

Club head speed vs ball speed

  • Chad Anfinson

Golf is a complicated game that requires the mastery of many skills. One of the most important areas of focus for any golfer is to understand how ball speed and club head speed work hand in hand when driving the ball.

Ball speed is the velocity that the ball leaves the club face at impact and is critical to a golfer’s ability to hit a golf ball. The higher the ball speed, the further and straighter the ball will travel. On the other hand, the club head speed is the speed the club is travelling at impact. The higher the club head speed, the more energy is transferred to the ball at impact.

However, if the golfers club head speed is too high and his ball speed is too low, this will result in a ball that is travelling low and short. Conversely, if the golfers club head speed is low but his ball speed is high, this will result in a ball that is soaring too high and with an unpredictable trajectory.

It is essential for any golfer to understand how both ball speed and club head speed can affect the outcome of their shot. While both need to be optimized, the key is to strike the perfect balance between the two. Once a golfer can accomplish this, they will be able to consistently hit the ball further and straighter than before.
